Why are the withholding taxes so high on bonus checks?

Cause
Payroll annualizes the taxable wages on the check to determine what the employees' annual earnings would be, then applies the annual earnings estimate to the tax table to determine the amount of tax. Bonuses are typically significantly higher than regular wages causing withholding taxes to calculate at a higher rate for Federal Withholding and most State Withholding taxes.
