Changing the method for determining the next number in a character field
Description

After updating to Sage 100 Contractor version 25.2.143 and later, you'll notice higher default numbers in fields like Invoice# and Order#. This change affects fields set to NEXT in properties (F7) and those automatically determined by the program.

Cause

In version 25.2.143 and later, the program finds the highest purely numerical value in a field and adds 1, instead of reading values in reverse order based on Record#. This change can disrupt workflows if previous records have unusually high numbers.

Resolution

You'll need to install Sage 100 Contractor version 25.2.162 or later to use the process described below.  Sage 100 Contractor: Download Portal

To switch back to your previous numbering method

  1. Install version 25.2.162 or later.
  2. Connect to Sage 100 Contractor Database Administration.
NOTE: A file named UseOldMethodForNEXTDefault-OFF is automatically created in [Drive letter]:.
  3. By default, this file indicates that the new numbering system is in use.
  4. To revert to the older adults numbering system used before the 25.2.162 release:
    • Right-click on the file UseOldMethodForNEXTDefault-OFF
    • Select Rename and change the OFF to ON
    • Don't just delete the word "OFF".  Instead, change OFF to ON
    • Don't delete the dash (-) or any other part of the file name
  5. After this is done, the file name is UseOldMethodForNEXTDefault-ON.

After the UseOldMethodForNEXTDefault-OFF file is renamed to UseOldMethodForNEXTDefault-ON, all Sage company databases revert to the numbering method used before 25.2.162.

Users see an immediate change when creating a new record. There's no need to open or close the program to see the change.
