Understanding when overtime calculations aren’t accurate

The following describes scenarios in which the program can’t determine overtime hours or compensation and shows how to fix each issue.

Handling semi‑monthly or monthly payroll schedules

Issue

  • The program doesn’t break hours into weekly segments.
  • Weekly segmentation drives overtime rules.

Fix

  1. Change the employee’s pay frequency to weekly or biweekly.
  2. Update the payroll calendar to match the new frequency.
  3. Enter the timecard hours again under the corrected period.
  4. Run payroll, then confirm weekly totals and calculate overtime correctly.

Or,

Manually edit the values in the following fields of the employee's 5-2-2 Payroll Record:

  • Federal Overtime Hours
  • Federal Qualified Overtime Comp

Reviewing employees with a salary amount and timecard hours

Issue

  • The program can’t confirm exempt or non‑exempt status.
  • Mixed salary and hours create incorrect overtime results.

Fix

  1. Verify the employee’s Exempt from overtime pay status in 5-2-1 Employees.
  2. Update the employee’s pay setup to match the correct status.
  3. Remove hourly entries for exempt workers, or set valid overtime rules for non‑exempt workers.
  4. Recalculate payroll to confirm accurate overtime behavior.

Evaluating timecards using piece‑rate pay on overtime hours

Issue

  • The program doesn’t calculate the correct overtime premium.
  • The program doesn’t apply the correct piece‑rate differential.

Fix

  1. Remove "overtime" rates from Piece‑Rate lines.
  2. Manually edit the values in the following fields of the employee's 5-2-2 Payroll Record:

    • Federal Overtime Hours
    • Federal Qualified Overtime Comp

Checking timecards with hours outside the pay period

Issue

  • Timecard lines sometimes contain incorrect dates.
  • Wrong dates cause valid entries to drop from the pay period.

Fix

  1. Review each timecard line for incorrect dates.
  2. Correct any typos, then save the updated entries.
  3. Recalculate payroll to verify overtime reflects accurate hours.
