Note: This process is for making a backup using file tools. If you want to make a copy of your data that is accessible for reporting, see How do I copy my files to another data folder for testing or historical reporting? or How do I copy my files to another data folder for testing or historical reporting in versions 16.1 and later?.

Payroll files are stored in different locations. You need to make a backup for each of the following groups of files.
In your current data folder, back up the following files:

  • Current.prt
  • History.prt - This file may or may not exist. Note: If you have never moved checks to history (Tools, Move Checks, Current to History), the History.prt file does not exist.
  • Master.prm
  • System.prs
  • Tax.prx - This file can be stored in a custom location. Refer to the article below for steps to verify the Tax.prx location.

In your Formula folder, back up the following files:

  • Pr.frm
  • User.frm
