Error: "Unable to connect to payroll database"

Summary

Sage HRMS displays the error "Unable to connect to payroll database" when password or connection settings don’t match the payroll database. Sage HRMS closes the client when the payroll database verification fails.

Cause

The issue occurs when the Sage Payroll ADMIN password changes in Sage Payroll Database Setup.
Firewall rules or disabled SQL protocols also block client connections.

Resolution

Update the payroll ADMIN password.

  1. Select Start, All Programs, Sage, Sage HRMS Server, then Database Connection Tool.
  2. Under Payroll Link Settings, locate Login ID: ADMIN.
  3. Update the password, and then select Save.
  4. Relaunch the client, and sign in to Sage HRMS.
  5. Stop here if it works.

Recreate the payroll database connection.

  1. Access Sage Payroll Database Setup.
  2. Delete the Payroll Database ID listed in the error.
  3. Readd the payroll database to the setup.
  4. Select Verify, and confirm the connection succeeds.

Create a missing employer database.

  1. Select Start, All Programs, Sage, Sage Payroll, then Database Setup.
  2. Sign in using the ADMIN password.
  3. Identify missing Database IDs.
  4. Select New.
  5. Enter a Database ID, usually a three-character company code.
  6. Set Database Format to Microsoft SQL Server.
  7. Set Database Category to Company.
  8. Select OK.
  9. Enter the Server Name.
  10. Enter sa for Login ID, and its password.
  11. Enter the Database Name, for example, SageHRMS_DEU.
  12. Select OK.
  13. Select Verify, choose all new IDs, and verify.
  14. Close all setup windows, and launch the client.

Check SQL Server protocols and firewalls.

  1. Sign in directly to the SQL server.
  2. Open SQL Server Configuration Manager.
  3. Enable TCP/IP and Named Pipes under all containers.
  4. Restart the SQL Server service.
  5. Temporarily disable Windows Firewall on the server and affected client if verification fails.
  6. Retry database verification after firewall changes.

New workstation checks.

  • Sign in as a local administrator
  • Right-click the HRMS Client, and select Run as administrator
