Error: "SQL Server version are not compatible, Migration Wizard cannot continue" during migration

Summary

Cause

  • Common causes

    • The source and target SQL Server instances use different versions.
    • The source instance runs a higher SQL build than the target instance.
    • You selected (Local\SQLInstance) instead of (Server\SQLInstance).
    • You ran Migration.exe instead of the correct migration utility.
    • You entered an incorrect SQL sa password.

Verify SQL Server versions

  1. Sign in to the source SQL Server instance through Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio.
  2. Sign in to the target SQL Server instance through Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio.
  3. In Object Explorer, review the SQL build number for each instance.
  4. Compare the source and target build numbers.
  5. Update the target instance if the source instance uses a newer build.

Verify service pack levels

If both servers use the same SQL Server release, verify both servers use the same Service Pack level.
Example:
  • SQL Server 2008 on the source server must match the Service Pack level on the target server.
  • Install the required SQL updates on the target server when versions differ.

Verify the SQL instance selection

  1. Start the migration process.
  2. When prompted, select the correct Server\SQLInstance.
  3. Don't select Local\SQLInstance unless it matches your migration environment.
  4. Confirm you’re running the correct migration utility from the \MAS90\Migration\ folder.

Verify SQL credentials

  1. Open the migration setup screens.
  2. Enter the correct SQL sa password.
  3. Verify the password before continuing with the migration.
