Error: "Sage 50 update could not be completed and needs to be run again."

Summary

When trying to install a product update, such as 2026.1, for Sage 50 Accounting, it fails and says it needs to run again. It may prompt to restart the computer and get stuck in a loop thereafter.

Description

Possible error message: "PeachtreePrefetcher.exe: Entry point not found."

Cause

  • Files are in use
  • The existing installation of Sage 50 on the computer is damaged

Resolution

2026.1 update

For the 2026.1 update, the error prompts to restart the computer. Restart the computer first, and then attempt to install the update again.

If the error still occurs, proceed through the troubleshooting steps below, in order.

1. Reinstall the 2nd January 2026 Payroll Tax Update for Release 2026

  1. Download the 2nd January 2026 Payroll Tax Update.
  2. Browse to your Updates folder and run the Tax2026Jan02_Release2026.exe file.
  3. Follow the prompts to install the update.
  4. When you click Install, you'll receive a message that the current tax tables are newer than the version you're attempting to install. Click Yes.
  5. Click Finish when the update completes.

2. Install the Sage 50 2026.1 Update

  1. Download the Sage 50 Accounting 2026.1 Update.
  2. Run the PTXA2026.1.0.exe file from your Updates folder and follow the prompts to install it.
  3. Click Finish when the update completes.

NOTE:

If the installation fails, see Additional Troubleshooting below. After successfully installing the 2026.1 update, be sure to install the July 2026 Tax Update.

3. Install the July 2026 Tax Update

  1. Download the July 2026 Payroll Tax Update.
  2. Run the Tax2026Jul_Release2026.exe from your Updates folder, and follow the prompts to install the update.
  3. Click Finish when the update completes.

Additional Troubleshooting

Disable SmartPosting and stop Sage 50 services

  1. Click the Windows Start button, and in the Search field, type services.
  2. Type Services. Right-click Services and select Run as administrator.
  3. In the Services window, right-click Actian Zen Workgroup Engine and select Stop.
  4. Scroll down to Sage 50 Connect Service 2026 and select Stop.
  5. Scroll down to Sage 50 SmartPosting 20xx. Right-click it and select Properties.
  6. Change the Startup type to Disabled.
  7. Click Stop and then click OK.
  8. Close the Services menu, then try installing the update again. After it installs successfully, restart Actian Zen Workgroup Engine and Sage 50 Connect Service 2026.

If the update still fails, uninstall and reinstall Sage 50 Accounting using the latest full install package, which contains the latest update build:

Uninstall and reinstall

  1. Download the latest full product release (which includes the patch update) from the Sage 50—U.S. Edition: Download Portal.
  2. Go to Control Panel, Programs and Features, and uninstall Sage 50 Accounting.
    • If there’s a notice saying that you can't uninstall because Sage is still running on the computer: Open Task Manager and go to Details and end Peachw.exe
  3. Reinstall Sage 50 Accounting from the new download. For installation steps, see How to install Sage 50 Accounting.
