About Pasting from Other Applications

Database Editor recognizes rows separated by new lines and columns separated by tabs from other applications. For example, you can paste a selection of lines from a Microsoft® Word document or a selection of cells from a Microsoft Excel sheet. This lets you quickly insert a group of values for a single field like the Description field.

About Pasting Items between Databases

You can copy items from one database and paste them into another database if they use suffixes of the same length. Database Editor pastes the items into their proper sorted location in the item grid.

Note: Database Editor does not preserve price links when you paste items into another database.

About Pasting and Item Dependencies

When you paste items from one database to another, Database Editor does not copy dependent data elements. (Dependent data elements include elements that are associated with the item; for example, formulas, variables, crews, units, and subcategories.) For the paste to succeed, those data elements must already exist in the target estimate.

About Pasting Items with WBS Codes

Database Editor pastes the values of WBS codes in either of the following circumstances:

  • You paste the items into the same database.
  • You paste the items into another database. Note that if the two databases have different WBS structures (for example, more, fewer, different names, or a different order), the WBS values are pasted from the clipboard into the database by position, without regard to WBS name. Pasting an entire row may give unexpected results. In this case, you can hide and reorder the WBS columns in the two databases, so they match, and then copy and paste only those columns.
