Description

Cause

The 1099-NEC form is used to report compensation given to a non employee. Starting with the year 2020, the IRS separated the reporting of payments to nonemployees from Form 1099-MISC and redesigned it. Further updates were made to the 1099-NEC for the year 2021.

Resolution

Option 1: For Payroll Subscribers - 4-part blank perforated form or eFile (Aatrix)
Note: Starting with the 2023.0 release, the 1099 and 1096 forms will no longer be available to print from the Forms menu in Sage 50. However, all customers with a valid plan will have the ability to print 1099/1096 forms through Aatrix. Efiling will require an Aatrix efile subscription or manual filing with the IRS. Customers on release 2022 and earlier still have the option of printing 1099/1096 forms through the Sage 50 Forms menu.

The 1099-NEC Form was released for all customers on a payroll subscription via an Aatrix forms update on December 16, 2020. To check for the latest tax forms, browse to Reports & Forms, Forms, Tax Forms, then double-click Payroll Tax Forms. That will automatically install any Aatrix tax forms that are missing and will load the latest forms for you.

In order for the data to automatically populate on the 1099-NEC form, you will need to be on at least the 2021.1.1 (preferably 2022.0) release and have the latest tax update installed. Visit How to install updates or Sage 50—U.S. Edition: Download Portal.
To print/e-file the 1099-NEC/1096 forms through Aatrix Forms:
  1. Go to Reports & Forms, Forms, Tax Forms, and double-click Payroll Tax Forms at the bottom.
  2. Select the desired 1099 form from the list of Available Forms (1096 forms are also generated as part of the 1099 filing).
  3. Select the correct filing year.
  4. Click OK.
  5. Follow the prompts to complete the form, filling in any required information.

Option 2: For All Customers - Print to 3-part red copy or IRS Scannable Forms
Note: Starting with the 2023.0 release, the 1099 and 1096 forms will no longer be available to print from the Forms menu in Sage 50. However, all customers with a valid plan will have the ability to print 1099/1096 forms through Aatrix (see above). Efiling will require an Aatrix efile subscription or manual filing with the IRS. Customers on release 2022 and earlier still have the option of printing 1099/1096 forms through the Sage 50 Forms menu.

If you do not subscribe to the payroll tax service, you can print the 1099 and 1096 forms through Sage rather than Aatrix. The 1099-NEC forms were redesigned by the IRS, so for your convenience, we have provided customized 1099-NEC forms in the following articles:
