Summary

Steps to resolve errors when opening .PDF files and Adobe Acrobat Reader is not installed.

Cause

If there is no PDF reader installed, or the PDF file format is set ot a program other than Adobe Acrobat Reader, the program may produce error messages. The messages include:

On going to the Image tab in an asset:

  • Adobe Acrobat Reader Not Installed
  • Please install Adobe Acrobat Reader to view this PDF Document. You can download it from the Adobe website at: adobe.com

Followed by:

  • Unable to display
  • Image '' could not be retrieved for display on the Image Tab.

Resolution

CAUTION: This solution needs advanced Operating System knowledge. Consult your system administrator for help. Sage isn't liable for issues caused by improper changes to the Windows Registry. Always back up your data before applying advanced solutions.

Note: The following assumes the Attachements path to the PDF files is setup correctly. See How to set up PDF attachment folder Network or Premier Depreciation or How to set up PDF attachment folder Sage Fixed Asset - Depreciation for more information.

In the Registry editor:

  1. Under HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT, find the .pdf key
  2. Right click the .pdf key and select New, Key and enter OpenWithList as the new key name.
  3. Right click on the OpenWithList key just created and select New, Key and enter name of .exe for default PDF viewer on the system

Note: It does not matter what name is set as the .exe file. The Sage Fixed Assets is checking that something exists in the OpenWithList key.
