How to set a Timeout for Idle connections

Summary

This article provides steps to set a timeout for idle connections to prevent persistent ghost connections.

Resolution

  1. Ensure all users are out of the system.
  2. On the Sage Fixed Assets server, open the service manager:
    • Go to Start, All Programs, Sage Fixed Assets, Tools, Database Utility Network Depreciation & Tracking. In the utility Click Service Manager
  3. In Service parameters, find the –tl 0 parameter. Change the 0 to the number of seconds an idle connection should stay open before disconnecting.
Example: When set to –tl 120, a connection without an open client at the other end will drop after 2 minutes.
Note: Sybase recommends a -tl liveness timeout set to 120 (2 minutes).
  4. Click Save, Click Stop, Click Start.
