Box 28 on T4 doesn't display an X for EI Exempt

Summary

In Sage 300, the EI exempt indicator doesn’t display an X in T4 Box 28 for some employees. Past EI tax activity in Sage 300 Payroll causes the EI exempt box behavior.

Description

Sage 300 sets Box 28 on the T4 based on EI tax history, not the current EI exempt setting.
Any previous EI entry prevents the X from displaying, even when the employee no longer pays EI.

Cause

Someone previously added EI tax, processed payroll, or posted transaction history for the employee.
Later removal of the EI tax leaves historical records that affect T4 printing.

Resolution

Remove an EI entry from the employee record

  • Open Canadian Payroll, Payroll Employees, then the employee’s Taxes tab
  • Review the list of taxes for any EI entry
  • Remove the EI entry, and save the record

Review the SQL database for historical EI entries

If the EI entry doesn’t appear on the employee record, review the database.

  1. Open the SQL database.
  2. Open the CPCHKH table.
  3. Review the TAXPLAN field for an EI entry.

If an EI entry exists, Sage 300 stored EI tax history from prior payroll activity.

NOTE:

Contact a Sage 300 Expert Services if historical records require correction.
