Example
You attempted to Generate Direct Deposit and received an error on your check journal or background tasks. You can use the Log Viewer to diagnose the issue.
Start with the column labeled Task. Scroll down until you find the label "Generate Direct Deposits" in the Task column. You can also use filters to find your task. See steps to filter the log viewer to look for certain activity.
Once you have found the relevant task, look at the column labeled Message. There will be several lines relating to your task. If you see any words other than Start or End, the Message may have some helpful information about your issue. Double-click on the relevant line to get the full Message and any secondary Details.
You can use combinations of any of the columns to locate the relevant task. This list explains the various columns in the Log Viewer:
| Column Name | Function |
| Log Type | Denotes if the task was undertaken by a user or if it’s an automated Security task. |
| Log Severity | Denotes if the line of information is informative or if it’s logging an Error. |
| Date Created | When the task was performed. You can use this if you know when you attempted the task first. |
| Application | Application of origin is shown by two-letter code, like PR (Payroll), JC (Job Cost), or BL (Billing). |
| Task | Name of the task you attempted to complete. Reports will show up as the name of the report, while other tasks will show up as Process Payroll, Print Checks, etc. |
| User Name | The user who performed the task. |
| Windows User | The Windows user who is logged on to the computer that performed the task. |
| Computer Name | Name of the computer that performed the task. |
| Message | Log of actions associated with the task. Most tasks will have a "Start" message and an "End" message, and occasionally a longer message if something unexpected happened. |
| Details | Details about the Message. Double-clicking on the line will also show this information. |
| Company | The company the user was in when performing the task. |
| Process ID | The Process ID correlates to the PID in the Windows Task Manager, Details tab. Can be used to force quit tasks, usually blank on the Log Viewer. |
IMPORTANT: To slow the growth of the file, it’s recommended to turn off (unmark) logging for the Security log type in the Log Settings. This will stop the recording of the log-in/out entries. You can access Log Settings one of two ways:
- Sage Desktop, Common Tasks, Log Viewer, then click Settings from the toolbar
- Sage Desktop, Options, Security Administration, Log Settings
