Error: "The name of the computer where Sage 50 is installed now exceeds 15 characters" when the name is 15 characters or fewer

Option 1: Edit hosts file

Make a host file entry on the workstations with the IPv4 address and name of the server. See Article: How to add a hosts file entry.

Note: If your server / host computer has a dynamic IP address, that address could change, making the hosts file entry invalid and causing Sage 50 Accounting not to open on the client machines. If you use this method it is recommended that you set up a static IP address on the server / host computer. Consult your network administrator or local IT support for assistance if needed.

Option 2: Create a local data path

  1. Use the Sage 50—U.S. Edition: Database Repair Utility Download Portal to create a local data path
  2. Copy the Forms folder from the server to the local data path in case the customer is using custom forms
  3. Browse and open each company so they will appear in the list of recently opened companies

Option 3: Verify Mapped drive is not using Fully Qualified Domain Name (FQDN)

  1. Open Start, Run (Windows Key + R)
  2. Type: CMD
  3. Select OK
  4. Type: NET USE
  5. Press Enter
  6. Verify the mapped drive isn't using FQDN (servername.local)
  7. If using FQDN remap using the server name; refer to Article: How to map a network drive

Option 4: Remap network drive to IP address

  • Map the network drive via IP address rather than hostname

Option 5: Set Windows to prefer IPv4 address over IPv6

Option 6: Run the program in compatibility mode

  1. Right-click Sage 50 icon, and then click Properties
  2. Click the Compatibility tab
  3. Place a Check in the box next to Run this program in compatibility mode for
  4. Select the Operating System they are using from the dropdown
  5. Click Apply
  6. Click OK
