Preparing to Install Sage Timeslips

Verifying system requirements

Before installing Sage Timeslips, please verify that your servers and workstation meet the necessary system requirements.

System Requirements: Sage Timeslips Premium

Verifying access rights

In order to install and use Sage Timeslips, all network users must have Change file rights (Read, Write, Execute, and Delete) for the installation folder.

Before installing Sage Timeslips, you must log into Windows with administrator rights to install Sage Timeslips. The Setup program will change Windows access rights to the installation folder for Users group to Full Control.

Using mapped drives (Network installations only)

In prior versions of Timeslips it was required to map network drives and make sure they all had the same network path on all network machines. Sage Timeslips Premium moving forward no longer has this as a requirement or recommendation. If you are upgrading you do not have to change anything and can keep using mapped drives if you still have them. If you are performing new installations mapped drives are no longer needed nor required.

Preparing to Upgrade Sage Timeslips (Upgraders only)

If you are upgrading a previous version of Sage Timeslips, you must convert your database before you can use it with the new Sage Timeslips version . To view the Conversion guide, please review the instructions in this KB article How to convert your BDE database to Firebird

Verifying Database Integrity

Before installing Sage Timeslips, make a backup in your current version by selecting File, Backup.

Next, use the Data Verification dialog box - select File, Data Verification - in your current version to verify the integrity of your database. Mark only Look for errors and click OK to search for errors.

If Sage Timeslips encounters any validation, linking, or integrity errors during the verification process, please contact the Technical Support chat team by clicking here to evaluate and correct the errors before installing your upgrade. We do not suggest that you attempt to repair errors on your own.

Purging Sage Timeslips data Timeslips 2006 or earlier

  • Purging data in order to be able to convert

When upgrading from Timeslips 2006 or earlier, Sage Timeslips cannot convert databases with more than 300,000 records of any type. This includes clients, time and expense slips, accounts receivable transactions, and client funds transactions.

If you have more than 300,000 of any of these types of records, you must purge data before you can convert your database for use with Sage Timeslips
  • Accessing the Purge function

Typically, you will use the File, Purge command to access the Purge dialog box. Please refer to the online Help system of your previous version of Sage Timeslips for more information about purging Sage Timeslips data. When purging slips, be sure to send them to an archive file so you can access them later if needed.
  • In 2018, the database size is not limited and there is no longer a need to purge slips.

Amount of Time to Convert Data

In general, larger databases will take an extended period of time to convert. Depending on the size of your database, the types of records you are converting, and the workstation you are using, the conversion process can take up to a few hours to complete. Please consider this when choosing a time to convert your database. If the process appears to be not responding, do not end the process manually.

For example, when upgrading from Sage Timeslips 2006 or prior, this process converts each slip, so the more slips you have in your database the longer the conversion process. When upgrading from Sage Timeslips 2014 or prior, this process converts each reprint bill image, so the more bill images you have in your database the longer the conversion process.

Installing Sage Timeslips

When you are ready to install Sage Timeslips please refer to the online Network Installation Guides for comprehensive information about installing Timeslips. See the knowledgebase article Sage Timeslips installation guides

Installing Sage Timeslips locally (Network installations only)

If you install Timeslips onto a network, you should run the local installation on each computer that will need to use the program. The local installer copies Timeslips program files to the network workstation. This allows users to run the Timeslips program files from the network workstation and share a database on the network server. This configuration increases performance and reduces the load on your firm’s network.

To begin the local installation procedure from a workstation, select Start, Run from the Windows taskbar and click Browse. Browse to your server machine, select Setup.exe within the Loclinst folder - Timeslips\Loclinst on the Timeslips server, by default - and click OK. If you are unable to locate your server machine name in browse list, you should be able to view the server by entering \\server_name (where server_name is the name of your server) and press ENTER. If your current login has proper rights to access the network share then a windows dialog should appear showing the contents of your server. if you are presented with a network login dialog, input your Windows credentials to gain access.

For more information on installing Timeslips locally, view the step by step instructions for performing a local install by following KB article 63864 'How to perform a local installation of Sage Timeslips' in Related Resources below.

Installing Sage Timeslips and Firebird on a multi-boot computer

If you have two or more Windows operating systems installed on the same computer, you should install Timeslips under each operating system. This will update your computer's registry settings and ensure that Timeslips runs properly from each operating system installation.

Converting Your Database (Upgraders only)

When you are ready to convert your database, please consider the following:

Database conversion across the network is allowed if you choose Network type. However if you choose Local type, conversion is not allowed, and you must copy your data locally to convert and retain that database for use locally only.

In prior versions, conversion across the network was possible but not recommended. In current Timeslips versions, due to the database change, this is no longer possible if you plan on using your database locally. The Firebird database engine requires conversions to be completed on the physical machine that the database resides if you choose a Local type database. If you attempt to initiate a conversion from a workstation that is pointed to your database on a server, and you choose Local type, you will be prompted to stop and copy your database locally.

In multi-user scenarios, if Timeslips is installed on the same computer that stores your Timeslips data, it is recommended that you access your data and complete the conversion process from that specific computer before accessing the database from other workstations.

Close other applications or Windows processes before starting the conversion

If other applications are running, they may use valuable resources that could speed up the conversion process. Please close any other applications such as Internet browsers/tabs, email programs or word processing programs before starting conversion.

Running Sage Timeslips in a Remote Desktop Services (RDS) environment

Users can access Sage Timeslips through Remote Desktop services. Each user accessing Timeslips through Remote Desktop services will use a network station license. Refer to the Sage Timeslips License Agreement for terms of use.

Along with network station licenses, you can view and maintain licenses used by Remote Desktop services connections. You can do this through the Licenses in Use dialog box of the Timeslips Administrator application.

When running Sage Timeslips Premium in a Remote Desktop services environment, we suggest that you run Terminal Services in Application Server Mode instead of Remote Administrative mode. Check with your network administrator for questions on mode types

Diagnosing Computers with Timeslips Administrator

Timeslips Administrator provides several options to help resolve issues with your Timeslips installation. The Diagnose This Computer command is used to identify and solve several different types of problems on your computer

You can also use Sage Timeslips Administrator in the unlikely case that you encounter data corruption within the Timeslips database on the server by choosing Data Verification and running with the option Look for and Repair Errors.

Tax Considerations for U.K. Customers

  • The following steps are for customers who are upgrading Sage Timeslips Premium for use in the U.K.

If you are not using the correct tax information for the U.K. in your current database, you must delete the current tax profiles and import the U.K. tax file. Once you have upgraded Sage Timeslips successfully, please follow the steps below:

To delete tax profiles in Sage Timeslips:

    1. Select Setup, Taxes to open the Tax Profiles page of the Taxes dialog box.
    2. Highlight AK, the first profile on the Name list, and click Delete.
    3. Sage Timeslips Premium confirms that you want to delete this tax profile. Click Yes to confirm, and delete the tax profile.

You must follow steps 2 and 3 for each profile in the Name list.

Note: You can import the U.K. tax file (see below) without deleting each tax profile individually. If you choose this method, the U.K. tax profiles will be listed along with the current U.S. tax profiles on the Name list in the Tax Profiles page of the Taxes dialog box.

To import tax profiles in Sage Timeslips Premium:

    1. Select Setup, Taxes to open the Tax Profiles page of the Taxes dialog box.
    2. Click Import to open the Select Tax Import File dialog box.
    3. Locate the U.K. tax file (TxVAT.txt) contained in your application folder (by default this folder is named Timeslips) and click Open to import the tax information from this file. The new tax profiles now appear on the Name list.
    4. Click Done.

For more information on taxes, see Overview of Taxes in the Sage Timeslips Premium online Help system.
