Upgrade SQL Server Express using Database Administration for Sage 100 Contractor
Description

Upgrade SQL Server Express using Database Administration for Sage 100 Contractor

Cause

You are using an older version of SQL Server Express for Sage 100 Contractor and would like to upgrade.

Resolution

In Sage 100 Contractor version 25.1 and later, there is now an option to upgrade the version of SQL Server Express you are using to version 2019 plus the latest cumulative update.

Important Note: Upgrading SQL Server to 2019 from SQL 2017 and lower will require restarting your machine.

Steps to upgrade SQL Server:

  1. Have all users log out of Sage 100 Contractor
  2. On the server, log into Database Administration
  3. If the version of SQL Server Express you are using is lower than 2019, or you have SQL Express 2019 installed but do not have the latest Cumulative Update (CU), you will be automatically directed to the Upgrade SQL Server Instance option under the Server Management menu.
  4. This window will display the current version you are using and the recommended version to update to.
  5. To upgrade (this is optional, but strongly recommended), click Upgrade SQL
  6. A message will display telling you what will be installed and that restarting the server will be required. Click OK to begin the upgrade. On a typical server, the upgrade will take approximately 10-15 minutes.
  7. After the installation of SQL Server 2019 Express is complete, you will get a message stating you must restart the server. STOP HERE.
  8. Check your Windows Updates and install any pending updates. Then go back to Database Administration and click OK on the restart prompt and your server will reboot.
  9. After the reboot, log back into Database Administration and follow the prompt to install the latest Cumulative Update (CU) for SQL Server 2019 Express (this is optional, but recommended). Installing the CU does not force a reboot.

Important Notes:

  • This process only upgrades the instance of SQL Server you are currently connected to in Database Administration. If you have created additional instances of SQL Server for Sage 100 Contractor, you will need to log into them with Database Administration and perform the upgrade separately.
  • You do not have to update SQL Server to be compatible with the latest versions of Sage 100 Contractor, but Sage recommends you do this to ensure you have the latest performance and stability fixes and improvements for SQL Server.
  • You may get prompted to restart your machine before or after the update is installed. If prompted before, open the Windows update on your machine, check for and install all available updates, and restart the server. You can then resume the SQL update.
  • Updating SQL Server does not require you to update your Sage databases.
  • This feature is only valid for installations of SQL Server Express Edition. If you are using SQL Server Standard Edition, you will need to manually download the recommended update from Microsoft and install it.
  • As of May 2023, the version you will be updated to is SQL Server Express 2019 and CU20. These will change as updates become available from Microsoft.
