How do I move my data from one computer to another?

Cause



Resolution

 NOTE: If you’re replacing your server, see I am replacing my computer. What do I need to do?

New computer

  1. Make a backup of each company. Refer to How to make a backup.

 NOTE: If the number of companies makes it time prohibitive to back up each company individually, see How do I manually transfer company data from a recovered or backed up data location?.

  1. Install Sage 50 on the new computer. See Installation instructions - Sage 50—U.S. Edition.
  2. Move the backups into a shared folder or onto removable media (USB drive, CD, flash drive) so they can be accessed at the new computer
  3. On the new computer, open Sage 50.
  4. Restore each backup and choose the option to Create a new company using the restored data. See How to restore a backup.

 NOTE: If you have any custom forms, select the option to restore custom forms along with data. 

Moving from server to workstation

  1. Close all instances of the software running.
  2. On the workstation you wish to make the new host, create a new local data path. See Using the Sage 50 Database Repair Utility.
  3. To move companies to the new data path follow How do I move my company data folder?.

Upgrading Windows

  1. Before installing the new version of Windows, open Sage 50.
  2. Make a backup of each company. See How to make a backup.
  3. Move the backup files onto removable media (USB drive, external hard drive, CD/DVD).
  4. After installing the Windows upgrade, reinstall Sage 50. See Installation instructions - Sage 50—U.S. Edition.
  5. Open Sage 50.
  6. Restore each backup, choosing the option to Create a new company using the restored data. See How to restore a backup.
