Perform a new install in a Remote environment
Description

Before Installation

  • Disable all antivirus programs, security software, and firewalls before installation to ensure it completes successfully
  • Review the Sage BusinessWorks System Requirements
  • You need the Client/Server Edition to install Sage BusinessWorks on a Remote Desktop Server
  • Ensure Actian Zen 15 (used in Sage BusinessWorks 2023+) is compatible with your other software
  • Contact third-party software vendors to verify compatibility with Sage BusinessWorks before installing
  • Close all programs before installation, as a reboot is possible during setup
  • If relocating Sage BusinessWorks, follow instructions for moving Sage BusinessWorks to a new location
  • Join the Sage BusinessWorks Announcements forum in the Community Hub to receive future product notifications

Download Sage BusinessWorks

Perform this on the server that runs the program and stores the data.

  1. Visit the Sage BusinessWorks Download Portal.
  2. Select Download Sage BusinessWorks 20xx.
  3. Enter your Sage Portal login and password.
  4. Click Download to start the process.
  5. Press CTRL + J to locate your download and open the downloaded file.
  6. Double-click SageBusinessWorks20xx.exe and accept the default extraction location.

At the Remote Desktop Server

  1. Log in to the computer as a user that has local administrator rights.
  2. Create and share a folder named Sage with full Share and NTFS permissions for all Sage BusinessWorks users.
    • Recommended location: C:\Sage
    • If user permissions are overly restrictive, grant full control rights to the SYSTEM user
    • Avoid using spaces in folder names to prevent errors in the UNC path
  3. Browse to C:\Sage BusinessWorks 20xx Install Files. Double-click Autorun.exe.
  4. Click Install Sage BusinessWorks 20xx.
  5. When prompted, install the required Microsoft files. Click Install.
  6. Click Next > to begin the Sage BusinessWorks installation
  7. Accept the license agreement. Click Next >.
  8. Choose Network Installation and enter your product code.
    • Find the product code in the email from Client Care after you complete your purchase
    • Follow the instructions for locating your product code
    • Use the correct product code to ensure the program functions properly. Contact Customer Support immediately if you have any concerns
  9. Select custom locations for Program and Data files and click Next >.
    • Program Files: C:\SAGE\BWProg
    • Data Files: C:\SAGE\BWData
  10. Accept the default location of the Actian Program Files. Click Next >.
  11. Select the Client Data Path that workstations will use to access data files. Click Next >.
  12. Accept the default Program Folder. Click Next >.
  13. Confirm the installation settings. Click Next >.
  14. When the installation is complete, click Finish.
  15. Exit the install Screen.

Install the program for remote users

Log in to a separate Remote Desktop Session. Repeat these steps for each user that will run the program remotely.

  1. Log in as the Windows user who needs access.
  2. Open the Sage program directory (default path: ...\Sage\BWProg).
  3. Double-click BWProfile.exe and click Next > to begin.
  4. Accept the default Program Folder. Click Next >.
  5. Review and confirm the installation settings. Click Next >.
  6. Click Finish when the installation completes.

Install the program for local users

Login at each local client computer. Run client setup once per workstation. Don't use the downloaded installation files. If prompted for a product code during client install, cancel and follow these steps:

  1. Right-click the Windows Start Button.
  2. Open File Explorer.
  3. Go to the Client Setup folder on the server. For example, \\Server\Sage\BWProg\Client Setup.
  4. Double-click Autorun.exe.
  5. Click Install Sage BusinessWorks Client.
  6. When prompted, install the required Microsoft files. Click Next >. 
  7. Accept the default Program Folder. Click Next >.
  8. Confirm the installation settings. Click Next > to begin the installation.
    • If prompted for admin credentials, enter the Windows network administrator user ID and password. This must be a Local Administrator on the Sage BusinessWorks server
  9. When the installation is complete, click Finish.

On the Application Server (The server that runs the program and stores the data)

  1. Log in to the computer as a user that has local administrator rights.

At the Remote Desktop Server (The server that users remote in to)

Install only the Actian Zen Enterprise Server Engine only on the Remote Desktop Server.

  1. Download Sage BusinessWorks 20xx.
  2. Double-click SageBusinessWorks20xx.exe and accept the default extraction location.
  3. Click Setup.
  4. Select Install Sage BusinessWorks 20xx.
  5. The installer extracts the installation files and displays the Installation screen.
  6. Select Browse CD.
  7. Browse to the Pervasive.SQL folder and double-click ActianServerInstall.exe (don't select the Install_Zen_EnterpriseServer file). 
  8. Follow the prompts to install Actian Zen.
  9. Reboot if prompted.

Log in to a remote desktop session using an administrator account different from the one that installed Actian

  1. Right-click the Windows Start Button.
  2. Open File Explorer.
  3. Go to the Client Setup folder on the server. For example, \\Server\Sage\BWProg\Client Setup.
  4. Double-click Autorun.exe.
  5. Click Install Sage BusinessWorks Client.
  6. When prompted, install the required Microsoft files. Click Next >.

  9. When the installation is complete, click Finish.

Register the Software

Update with the latest service pack

  1. Download and install the current service pack for your version.
  2. If using a network version, Install it on the server and all client workstations.
