Error: "File in Use" or "[Record] in use"

Summary

I get an error in Sage 300 CRE that a file or record is in use. This can occur throughout the program, and can generate various similar messages or errors.

Cause

Another user or workstation has locked the record or file. For example, posting Accounts Payable (AP) invoices temporarily lock AP files.
A record or file is locked open on the server.
A large Log Viewer file (QLM file) can also cause these messages or files to become locked.

Resolution

CAUTION: This solution requires advanced knowledge of Windows security and network settings. Sage isn't responsible for any issues that arise from changes to these settings. Ensure you back up all system and application databases necessary for a complete restoration. It's advisable to contact a certified consultant or your system administrator for assistance.

Follow the steps below until the issue resolves, testing after each step. You won't always need to complete all steps to stop the error message.

After resolving the error, restart services for any third-party programs to refresh the connection to Sage data.

Have all users exit all Sage 300 CRE applications. Confirm that users in remote sessions log off properly.
Have all users exit any third-party programs that access Sage data.
Have the affected user reboot their workstation.
Release the files at the server.
Archive or move the Log Viewer file.
