Description

Before Installation

  • Review the Sage BusinessWorks System Requirements
  • Ensure Actian Zen 15 (used in Sage BusinessWorks 2023+) is compatible with your other software
  • Contact third-party software vendors to verify compatibility with Sage BusinessWorks before installing
  • A database update is required
    • Schedule your installation when users can stay out of the system for the full process
  • If relocating Sage BusinessWorks, follow instructions for moving Sage BusinessWorks to a new location

Pre-Installation Preparation Checklist

Close all programs before installation, as a reboot is possible during setup. If all users have logged out but the program still shows active users, refer to the guide on disconnecting stranded users
Disable your antivirus program, security software, and firewalls before installation to ensure it completes successfully
Back up each company and the System database using File, Backup
Rebuild all modules in each company. If using Accounts Receivable, Inventory, and Order Entry, rebuild in this order: AR, IC, then OE
Close your programs and exit Sage BusinessWorks until installation completes

Download Sage BusinessWorks

Perform this on the server that runs the program and stores the data.

  1. Visit the Sage BusinessWorks Download Portal.
  2. Select Download Sage BusinessWorks 20xx.
  3. Enter your Sage Portal login and password.
  4. Click Download to start the process.
  5. Press CTRL + J to locate your download and open the downloaded file.
  6. Double-click SageBusinessWorks20xx.exe and accept the default extraction location.

Select the instructions for your install type

One server setup. Users connect remotely to a single server that runs the program and stores the data.

At the Remote Desktop Server

  1. Log in as a local administrator on the computer where you're installing Sage BusinessWorks. If you're not the original installer, or see an error "The installation originally performed by...", refer to installations performed by another user.
  2. Browse to C:\Sage BusinessWorks 20xx Install Files. Double-click Autorun.exe.
  3. Click Install Sage BusinessWorks 20xx.
  4. When prompted, install the required Microsoft files, click Install.
  5. Once complete click Next >.
  6. Click OK when the message confirms the correct Actian database version.
  7. Review the Sage End-User License and Support Agreement. If you accept the terms, click Next >.
  8. Review the installation settings and click Next > to begin the installation.
  9. When installation is complete, click Finish.
  10. Launch Sage BusinessWorks and log in with your credentials.
  11. While at the server, run the database update for all companies.

Upgrade the program for remote users

Log in to a separate Remote Desktop Session. Repeat these steps for each user that will run the program remotely.

  1. Log in as the Windows user who needs access.
  2. Open the Sage program directory (default path: ...\Sage\BWProg).
  3. Double-click BWProfile.exe and click Next > to begin.
  4. Accept the default Program Folder. Click Next >.
  5. Review and confirm the installation settings. Click Next >.
  6. Click Finish when the installation completes.

Upgrade the program for local users

Login at each local client computer. Run client setup once per workstation. Don't use the downloaded installation files. If prompted for a product code during client install, cancel and follow these steps:

  1. Right-click the Windows Start Button.
  2. Open File Explorer.
  3. Go to the Client Setup folder on the server. For example, \\Server\Sage\BWProg\Client Setup.
  4. Double-click Autorun.exe.
  5. Click Install Sage BusinessWorks Client.
  6. When prompted, install the required Microsoft files. Click Next >. 
  7. Accept the default Program Folder. Click Next >.
  8. Confirm the installation settings. Click Next > to begin the installation.
    • If prompted for admin credentials, enter the Windows network administrator user ID and password. This must be a Local Administrator on the Sage BusinessWorks server
  9. When the installation is complete, click Finish.

On the Application Server (The server that runs the program and stores the data)

Update with the latest service pack

  1. Download and install the current service pack for your version.
  2. If using a network version, Install it on the server and all client workstations.
