Cause
Resolution

1. Make sure other users aren't performing single-user tasks

This error commonly occurs when another user is exporting a report from Sage 50 to Excel.  Wait for the export to finish, and you'll be able to continue without error.

2. Restart Actian

  1. Have all users exit out of Sage 50.
  2. Use Task Manager on each computer to make sure no Sage 50 processes are running in the background.
  3. Restart Actian on the server.
  4. Restart Actian on each workstation.
  5. Test to see if you still get the error.
  6. If you still get the error, reboot the server and test again before trying the next step.

3. Close open files on the server

  1. Verify that all users are out of Sage.
  2. Open Control Panel, Administrative Tools, and then Computer Management.
  3. Expand System Tools.
  4. Expand Shared Folders.
  5. Select Open Files.
  6. Close any session that shows PT.LCK at the end.

If you still get the error, we have targeted steps for the following situations.  Use the steps that best describe when the error occurs.

▼If the error occurs when using Paya Connect Desktop
  1. Stop Paya Connect Desktop by right-clicking the pcd icon in the System Tray and click Exit.
  2. Try what you were doing in Sage 50 again.
  3. For help with the third-party Paya Connect Desktop add-on, contact Paya.
▼If the error occurs when importing data in Sage 50 Quantum
  1. Have all users exit Sage 50.
  2. Go to Maintain, Company Information.
  3. Click the Posting Method button and change from SmartPosting to Real-time posting.
  4. Click OK and then click OK again.
  5. Attempt the import procedure again.

If none of the above apply, continue with the next step below.

4. Run Sage 50 as an Administrator

Right-click the Sage 50 desktop icon and select Run as Administrator.

If your company opens successfully, follow these steps to set Sage 50 to run as Administrator by default:

  1. Right-click program icon and select Properties.
  2. Select Compatibility.
  3. Select Change settings for all users.
  4. Place a check mark in the Run this program as an administrator box.
  5. Click Apply and then OK.
  6. Then click OK to close the box.

If your company doesn't open, continue with the next step below.

5. Disable User Account Control (UAC)

  1. Click the Windows Start button, and in the Search field, type UAC.
  2. Select Change User Account Control settings.
  3. Move the slider bar down to Never notify and click OK.
  4. When prompted with Do you want to allow this app to make changes to your device?, click Yes.
  5. Reboot the computer for the changes to go into effect.
  6. Test to see if your company opens without error.
  7. If you still get the error, right-click the Sage 50 desktop icon and select Run as Administrator.
    • If this works, follow the steps in Section 4 to run Sage 50 as Administrator by default
    • Otherwise, move on to the next section

6. Make sure the company folder is in the right data path

  1. Locate your company data folder.  Note the directory for the folder.
  2. Use the INI file to find your data path.
  3. If your company data folder isn’t in your data path, move it to your data path.
  4. Verify that your company opens without error.

7. Verify that your permissions are correct

  1. Check your file permissions in Windows.
  2. On the server and workstations, change the Network connection type to Home, Work, or Private.
  3. Confirm that your firewall is allowing the Actian database service through on the selected network type.

 TIP: If you need help with your firewall or permissions, contact your IT or security software provider. 

8. Remove and reinstall Actian

On the server, completely remove and reinstall Actian.

9. Clean up corrupted files

If you're still unable to resolve the error, corrupted data files are the cause.  The following sections will guide you through carefully removing potentially damaged files from your company data.  We've laid these sections out in order from least to most intensive, but none of them will remove essential data from your company.  However, some of these steps will result in the loss of non-critical data, such as Track-It statuses, existing linked attachments, and alerts.

Clean up the company data folder

  1. Close Sage 50 on all computers.
  2. Browse to the individual company folder that you’re unable to open.
  3. Delete or rename the following files:
    • COSESS.DAT
    • *.RPT
    • *.PTR
    • *.PTL
    • *.MKD
    • *.LCK
    • *.DATptl
    • *.DATtemp
    • *.DDF
  4. Test and see if you can open the company without error.  If not, continue below.

Remove damaged files in the data path

  1. Close Sage 50 on all computers.
  2. Browse to your data path.
  3. Find and rename each of the following files by adding old to the front of the file name:
    • ENVSESS.DAT
    • ENVUSER.DAT
    • ENVSETNG.DAT
    • LGNSESSN.DAT
    • SERIAL.DAT
    • SERIAL.DAT.BAK
    • Entitlements.xml
    • SoftwareInstallations.xml
    • Clientinfo.xml
    • Any files ending in LCK
    • Any files ending in PTL
       TIP: If you’re unable to rename one or more of the files, close any open files on the server 
  4. Re-open Sage 50. Activate the program and verify that you’re able to work without getting the error.

Create a new company data folder

  1. Create a new company data folder and copy into it only essential data files.
  2. Test Sage 50 with the new company data folder and make sure you don't get the error.  If it persists, continue below.

Create a new data path

Create a new data path folder and move your new company data folders to it.
